Dr. B.J Agunbiade
Dr. Agunbiade Oluwadare Joel is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Medical Biochemistry, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife. He joined the University in October 2016 as an Assistant Lecturer and has progressed through teaching, research, and service to his present academic rank. Dr. Agunbiade obtained his Bachelor of Technology degree in Biochemistry (Second Class Upper) from Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso, and both his Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Biochemistry from Obafemi Awolowo University. His academic training has provided him with a strong grounding in enzyme kinetics, toxicological biochemistry, and experimental biochemistry.
Dr. Agunbiade’s research interests are focused on enzyme biochemistry, toxicology, and applied biocatalysis, particularly the extraction, purification, characterization, and kinetic studies of enzymes such as polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, lipase, glutathione transferase, and acetylcholinesterase. His research explores the biochemical roles and biotechnological applications of these enzymes in detoxification processes, synthesis of functional molecules, and the development of cross-linked protein networks. He has published extensively in reputable national and international journals, including Heliyon, Biocatalysis and Agricultural Biotechnology, Toxicology Reports, Discover Chemistry, and The Microbe. He is a current beneficiary of the 2020–2023 Merged Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Research Intervention, serving as the Principal Investigator, and has also successfully secured and participated in other TETFund-funded research projects as a co-researcher, demonstrating his strong commitment to funded, problem-driven scientific research.
In teaching, Dr. Agunbiade is actively involved in undergraduate medical biochemistry instruction and currently teaches Medical Biochemistry II (CLI 220) and Medical Biochemistry III (CLI 320). He has also rendered significant academic and administrative services within the University, including serving as Departmental Secretary, Assistant Coordinator for Part II Medical Students, and an online tutor for distance learning programmes. In addition, he serves as an online facilitator for the National Open University of Nigeria. Dr. Agunbiade is a member of the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and regularly participates in national and international conferences, workshops, and capacity-building programmes aimed at enhancing teaching quality, research ethics, and scholarly visibility.
